  1. Integumentary System

  2. Slide 2 1. Functions/Job of the System • Record the functions of the integumentary system on the back of the integumentary system sheet. There are 5 functions.

  3. Check you work… Slide 3 Functions of Integumentary System (skin) Covers the body to prevent water loss Protects the body from infection and injury Controls body temperature (sweat, fat) Gets rid of wastes (sweat) Produce Vitamin D – helps body absorb calcium Gathers sensory information about the environment

  4. Slide 4 • Draw a diagram of the skin. Include the 3 layers of the skin, sweat glands, hair follicles, blood vessels. Thin book – pg 58 Thick book – pg 198

  5. Slide 5 2. Skin Diagram Fold 3 tiny pieces of paper in half. On the outside write - epidermis - dermis - fatty Layer On the inside, describe the job of each layer.

  6. Slide 6 On the inside, copy the notes. Epidermis – production of melanin and prevention of water loss (dead skin cells) Dermis – production of vitamin D, sweat glands release sweat to regulate body temperature Fatty Layer- fat acts as an insulator to help regulate body temperature

  7. Slide 7 Use the picture below to correctly glue the paper onto your skin diagram

  8. Slide 8 Skin Diagram Melanin (thick book, pg 199) Vitamin D (thick book, pg 200) Fold your skin diagram in half Tape 2 sheets of paper to the outside. Label: melanin and vitamin D Lift the sheets up, and write the main function of these chemicals. See picture

  9. Slide 9 Check your Answers Melanin – pigment produced to protect the skin from the sun’s UV rays, gives the skin its tan color Vitamin D – produced to help the bones absorb calcium

  10. Slide 10 4. Complete the foldable on skin injuries and diseases • Set up the foldable according to the picture • Describe the injury/disease • For athlete’s foot and skin cancer, identify if the disease is infectious or noninfectious. Athlete’s Foot (thin book, pg 62) Cut (Thick book, pg 201) Bruise (Thick book, pg 201) Skin Cancer (thin book, pg 61-62/184)

  11. Check you answers… Bruises Slide 11 Blood vessel in the skin are broken Blood leaks to surrounding tissue Over time, blood is broken down causing a change in the color of the bruise

  12. Check you answers… Cuts Slide 12 Any tear in the skin Blood flows out of the tear until a clot/scab is formed New skin cells are formed under the scab

  13. Check you answers… Athlete’s Foot Slide 13 Infectious (caused by a pathogen and can be spread) Caused by a pathogen(fungus) Hard to cure Grows in warm, moist areas (between toes) Can contract from public areas

  14. Check you answers… Skin Cancer Slide 14 Non-Infectious Disease (not spread or caused by a pathogen) Skin cells in dermis are damaged Damaged caused by UV rays from the sun or tanning beds Related to heredity
