Counterculture • Define: • Mostly college-aged, white, middle-class Americans, upset by mainstream American culture, protested society by leaving it • Known as “hippies” • Grew partly out of New Left and opposition to Vietnam War • Heavily influenced by beat movement of 1950s • Peace, love, and harmony “Tune in, turn on, and drop out”

After only a few years influence started to fade • Many communes became violent • Homes for muggers, drug dealers, and runaways • August 1969 • Charles Manson Murders • December 1969 • Altamont Raceway Concert • Hells Angels, hired to provide security beat an African-American man to death • Three other concert goers killed • Batch of bad LSD caused numerous bad “trips” • Doctors could not treat everyone • Heavy drug use takes its toll • Overdoses and dependence consistent problem in hippie community • Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin die of over doses in 1970 • Many hippies eventually are forced to turn to welfare or other government benefits • “We were together at the level of peace and freedom and love. We fell apart over who would cook and wash the dishes and pay the bills.” Decline of the Movement
