Critique of Fall 2011 Collection Development Selection Policy with focus on philosophy, Library Bill of Rights, responsibilities, gift criteria, review guides, weeding standards. Reconsideration Policy includes step-by-step guide, timeline, book handling instructions, challenger form, but lacks tech-specific selection rules. Proposal suggests integrating technology selection policy in outline form for consistency.

Selection and Reconsideration Policy Critique Cathy Kidder Fall 2011 Collection Development LIBM 6360
Selection Policy • Written in outline form • Written for whole district, not for each building and the grade levels the building serves • Contains philosophy and Library Bill of Rights
Selection Policy • Contains responsibility statement • Contains gift statement • Contains partial list of review guides • Weeding criteria included
Reconsideration Policy • Contains step by step instructions for challenging a book • Has a timeline in which certain stages of the process occur • Has a statement on what to do with the book during reconsideration process • A form is contained for the challenger to fill out
Outstanding Issues • No technology specific selection policy
Changes • Add selection policy section specifically for technology (programs, e-readers, monitors, etc…) • Write in outline form so it is consistent with the rest of the policy
