  1. Formatting Cellsin Microsoft Excel

  2. In the ribbon on the right is Format.

  3. Highlight the cells you want to format.When you click on Format, select Format cells at the bottom

  4. A dialogue box pops up on top of your worksheet.So here are tabs, sort of like flipping through folders in a drawer. Each tab has options.The tab that is active shows white. “Protection” is the tab active here. This can lock certain cells so that only the person with the password can change it. Often used in budget worksheets.

  5. When you click on Number you can see the options.General means just that, no specific formatting.

  6. When you select Number (under the Number tab)you can pick the number of decimal places that show up in the cell.The default is 2 decimal places.There are times you’ll want whole numbers without any decimals. This is where you’d set that. Use the arrows to indicate 0 decimal places.

  7. Pause here, set decimal places to zero and enter the following data: A1 1,000 B1 2,000 C1 3,000 D1 4,000 E1 5,000

  8. As you enter the data, you’ll see the cell that is active here and it’s value here.

  9. You’ll see that you’re not looking at numbers, but rather ####The number is still there, it’s just that the column is too narrow to display it.

When you click on the Alignment tab there are lots of options!You can dictate the horizontal and vertical alignment in the box.You can Wrap Text by checking the box in front of the words ~which means the text automatically wraps in the cell.Here you can change the angle of the text. Grab the red diamond in the orientation box and drag it to 45 degrees (shown on next slide)

  11. When you get the red diamond to this position, click OK at the bottom of the dialogue box. Your sheet should now look like this:

  12. The font tab allows you to change the font style, size, and color.There are shortcuts for these. But here is where you can add effects like strikethroughs, superscripts and subscripts.

  13. The Fill tab allows for fill effects.

  14. Fill Effects: A1 Horizontal 2 color white and yellow B1 Vertical 2 color blue and red

  15. For cell C1, use color 1 green, color 2 orange, but then click on variant that shows the orange in the middle.The sample box in the lower right shows what the effects will look like if you click OK.

  16. Patterns are also available.Set D1 to Pattern Thin Diagonal Crosshatch ~ the bottom right choice.Color ~ red

  17. Fill Effects for E1 Pattern Style Horizontal Stripe color blue

  18. If you did it correctly, your worksheet will look like this:
