  1. Best Key West Aquarium Maintenance Guide and Tips How often an aquarium needs to be cleaned depends largely upon the number and type of occupants, feeding habits, and filtration used in it. A low-maintenance aquarium with good water quality is the result of careful feeding, low stocking levels, and good filter maintenance. Below are the points for the Key West aquarium maintenance schedule for the average aquarium as a guide. Daily ● Give the fish something to eat. When and how much to feed depends upon the species of fish. Do not overfeed the fish. The overfeed will result in more waste, resulting in difficulty maintaining a healthy fish tank. ● Take a temperature reading. Depending on the time of day, the temperature may change. Make sure the temperature you're measuring is within your fish's safe range. ● Verify that all other equipment is operational. Some filter motors may become stuck after a power outage. Make sure there wasn't a power outage last night. ● Pay attention to the fish. Is everyone present? Is everyone acting normally? Are there any symptoms of illness? ● Pay attention to the water. Is the sky cloudy? Is there a stench? Does it appear to be yellow? These signs could indicate that the aquarium is in need of maintenance or that it is unhealthy.

  2. Weekly ● Cut off any excess plant growth and remove any dead plant leaves. ● Using a scraper or an algae magnet, remove algae from the front glass. ● Using a cloth and window cleaning spray, clean the outside of the glass. Apply the cleaning agent to the cloth first, then to the glass. This keeps any excess spray out of the aquarium. ● Using a syphon, remove large debris from the substrate's surface. Prepare a large bucket below tank level and insert a tube with a diameter of about one inch into the aquarium. Suck on the other end of the tube until the water starts to flow out of the aquarium through the tube. To avoid getting a mouthful of tank water, you'll have to be cautious (and quick). Sweep the inside-the-aquarium end across the substrate as if vacuuming it. Try to stay away from the gravel and fish! Finally, any lost water should be replaced with fresh, conditioned water. Conditioned water is tap water that has been treated with a chlorine or chloramine-removing agent.

  3. Any aquarium upkeep should be completed in one sitting. Scraping algae, moving a plant, or adjusting a rock are all stressful events for a fish. As a result, the best course of action is to perform all tank maintenance in one go.
