  2. When Luda was twelve, she got a present. A canary! She named it Dick.

  3. Luda thought it was a pity to keep the canary in a cage all the time so sometimes she let him fly.

  4. One day, the bird flew out the window and never returned to his cage.

  5. A neighbor led Luda to the well. They came to the lip of the well and looked in. Inside the well was dark and cool.

  6. “Dad, Dick is in the well! Will you help me get him?”

  7. “I think this might be impossible.” Luda dad said, “I don't have a ladder long enough to reach Dick.”

  8. “But you can't leave Dick in the well! Daddy, let me go down in a bucket and I can get him! Luda cried.”

  9. “You can't, my dear! It is too dangerous,” her father said.

  10. “But we have to try!” Luda insisted. “It is the right thing to try and save Dick.”

  11. “Are you sure that you can do it?” asked her father.

  12. Luda got into the bucket. Her dad gently lowered the bucket with the girl into the well.

  13. “I got Dick, daddy! Lift me!”

  14. Carefully, with trembling hands, dad pulled them into the sunlight. How he admired his brave girl!

  15. “Were you afraid?” the father asked.

  16. “Of course not, Daddy! I knew you were holding the rope.

  17. “It's great that you trusted me. I want you to trust our Heavenly Father just as you trusted me.”

  18. Dear Jesus, Thank you for loving me and the little birds. Help me to trust you with all my heart and to remember that I can always depend on you for help. Amen.
