  1. Gummy smile and the ways to treat it. Anyone who shows a significant amount of their upper gums when they smile maybe considered to have this condition, which creates an unbalanced look, emphasizing gums over teeth. Excess gum tissue or an upper lip that lifts considerably when a person smiles are the main causes for a gummy smile appearance. It is medically named as an excessive gingival display. Causes of a gummy smile: There are several concepts about how the teeth forming a gummy smile. Although it is a normal variation of human anatomies, like in wisdom teeth cases, it caused by an abnormal growth of a particular structure. 1) An overactive upper lip When at rest, the upper lip is in normal length. But it rises higher when smiling. 2) Vertical maxillary excess Which is a condition when there is an overgrowth jaw bone. 3) Abnormal eruption of the teeth Teeth may have grown to a proper length but they covered by gum and appear short. 4) Excessive overgrowth of gum tissue Known as hyperplasia or gingival enlargement.
