What is temperature? • Temperature is a measure of the warmth or coldness of an object or substance with reference to some standard value. • It also is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter, expressed in terms of units or degrees designated on a standard scale.

  3. How is it measured? • Temperature is measured by a thermometer. • A thermometer is a glass tube with a bulb containing either mercury or alcohol. • As the temperature rises it causes the liquid to increase, while if the temperature decreases, the liquid will too. • Numbers are placed alongside the glass tube that mark where the temperature is at.

  4. Units of Temperature • Fahrenheit (F*) • - 32 degrees represent ice point, 212 degrees represent steam point. • - Used mainly in the United States • Celsius (C*) • -Zero degrees represent ice point, 100 degrees represent steam point. ( K-273.15)=C* • - Used everywhere else. • Kelvin (K) • - measures the coldest temperature there can be. • - Kelvin deals with absolute zero. This is at minus 273.15 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature, occurring when no heat energy remains in a substance. • -Used by scientists.

Globe Continued… • Continental Drift • -changed physical features of the land mass and position of water bodies. • Volcanoes • -Ash and lava can affect environment, ash goes into the atmosphere and lessens the amount of sunlight causing temperature to go down. • Earth’s tilt on axis • - Sun is unevenly distributed across Earth because of the tilt. • Ocean currents • - Sun goes in ocean and is transported by channels to land masses.
