  1. How an e-Procurement Portal Revolutionises Business Efficiency Keywords: e-Procurement Portal, GeM Training Course, Public Procurement, e- Procurement, GeM Portal Introduction With the growing integration of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), digitalisation is revolutionising how government bodies and businesses operate. One of the most impactful innovations in this space has been the emergence of Government e Marketplace (GeM), India’s largest public e-procurement portal, which has successfully replaced traditional and manual procurement systems. Launched in 2016, GeM has redefined public procurement in India by providing a secure, transparent and inclusive platform. It enables businesses, including Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), Women-led enterprises, Startups, Self-Help Groups, etc., to seamlessly participate in government procurement from anywhere, at any time. Today, GeM serves over 1.6 lakh government buyers across Central & State Ministries, PSUs, Autonomous Institutions, Local Bodies, Panchayats and Cooperatives and hosts a thriving ecosystem of over 23 lakh sellers and service providers. With this scale, GeM has democratised access to government procurement, offering an efficient, transparent and end-to-end digital marketplace for Business- to-Government (B2G) commerce. Globally, GeM is now the second-largest e- procurement portal by order volume, following South Korea’s KONEPS. 7 Ways GeM is Revolutionising Business Efficiency in Public Procurement 1. End-to-End Digital Infrastructure GeM provides a completely cashless, paperless and contactless procurement experience, significantly reducing delays caused by manual processes. Sellers and buyers benefit from a fully auditable and digitally traceable transaction record, enhancing accountability and transparency. A dedicated digital dashboard ensures real-time visibility into procurement activities, from order placement to delivery and payments, enabling faster decisions and greater control for all stakeholders. 2. Ease of Doing Business GeM has significantly lowered the cost of doing business, especially for small sellers. With 97% of orders now exempt from transaction charges, and a capped fee of just 0.30% on orders above ₹10 lakh, GeM has made public procurement more accessible than ever.

  2. For buyers, the platform offers over 11,000+ product categories and 340+ service categories, truly serving as a one-stop shop for government procurement needs. 3. 24/7 Chatbot Assistance Powered by AI GeM’s AI-powered chatbot, GeMAI, offers round-the-clock assistance by intelligently processing user queries and delivering relevant information instantly. GeMAI now also supports voice command functionality, making the experience even more intuitive and accessible. This innovation helps users navigate complex processes with ease and speed, improving user satisfaction and efficiency. 4. Augmented Reality (AR) for Smarter Buying In a unique move, GeM has integrated Augmented Reality (AR) in collaboration with a third-party provider. Over 300 products now come with AR-enabled QR codes that allow buyers to view 3D models of items on their mobile devices, zoom, scale, or even place them in real-world environments, ensuring better evaluation before procurement. 5. Empowering Hyperlocal and Rural Businesses In its commitment to enhance “Access to Market,” GeM aims to foster self-reliance in India’s underrepresented sellers through its robust digital infrastructure. The platform actively supports key initiatives launched by the Government of India including Vocal for Local, Make in India, ODOP (One District One Product) GI- tagged products and the promotion of Millets through dedicated outlet stores. GeM is playing a pivotal role in strengthening India’s hyperlocal economy and empowering local manufacturers, including rural artisans, weavers and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) by supporting such initiatives. Since GeM eliminates the scope of intermediaries, it allows sellers / service providers to directly sell their offerings to government buyers, which in turn ensures a level playing field in the public procurement domain, even at the grassroots level. 6. Amplifying B2G Opportunities for Startups, Women & Youth GeM’s flagship initiatives like SWAYATT, Startup Runway, and Womaniya have opened doors for thousands of startups, youth-led, and women-led enterprises to participate in public procurement, even without prior experience.

  3. These initiatives have unlocked new markets and growth opportunities, allowing entrepreneurs to directly access the B2G ecosystem and scale their businesses sustainably. Since its inception, over 34000 startups and 1.96 lakh women entrepreneurs have registered on GeM, leveraging the e-procurement portal to unlock new opportunities in the public procurement domain. 7. GeM Training Courses and Capacity Building To ensure inclusive digital participation, GeM offers free online training courses available in 12 Indian languages for buyers and sellers of all experience levels. These self-paced, structured courses cover registration, catalogue management, bidding, order fulfilment, compliance and more, providing practical know-how for seamless navigation of the platform. GeM also regularly conducts webinars, workshops and training calendar rollouts to further handhold users and support capacity building. Conclusion By replacing outdated, manual systems, GeM’s e-Procurement portal has enhanced business efficiency across India’s public procurement landscape. It has streamlined processes, reduced administrative burdens and created a level playing field for millions of sellers, from startups to village-level enterprises. More than just a platform, GeM is a partner in nation-building, actively supporting digital inclusion, economic empowerment and innovation. With each transaction, GeM brings transparency, accountability and speed to public procurement, while enabling businesses to scale through digital transformation. As India embraces its digital future, GeM continues to lead the way, transforming procurement into a driver of efficiency, transparency and inclusive growth.
