  1. Science Operations Status EPIC Ops-Cal Meeting November 6, 2007, Mallorca María Santos-Lleó (XMM-Newton Science Support Manager) Maria Santos-Lleo

  2. Contents • Science program: AO6 & AO7 • Mission planning issues • Instrument operations • SAS: release 7.1 • XSA: release 4.0 and 2XMM, next release • Users feedback: UG recommendations • Scientific highlights • Mission extension: AWG and SSAC recommendation • Symposium: The X-ray Universe 2008 Maria Santos-Lleo

  3. … and the Science Support Team • Community Support and Mission Planning Team Matthias Ehle • Instrument Dedicated Teams: • EPIC: Marcus Kirsch • RGS: Andy Polloc • OM: Antonio Talavera • SAS Carlos Gabriel Maria Santos-Lleo

  4. Science Program • AO6, May 2007 - April 2008: status as of 29 October: • A+B performed: 7500 ks: 58% • C: 93ks: 1% (27-31% in last two AOs) • AO7, May 2008 – April 2009 • New: Very Large Programs (>1000 ks) • 10 submitted with mean requested time 1980 ks • Oversubscription 7.8 & 586 proposals • OTAC currently underway: • 13 panels, 66 scientists, rotate every 2 years • chairperson 29-30 Nov at ESAC • Results by Christmas (if approval from D/Sci) • Second phase in January-February Maria Santos-Lleo

  5. Mission Planning • Perth maintenance in October 2007: • Dongara used as replacement rev 1431-1445 • Several problems (didn’t work as expected) • Heavy re-scheduling & several gaps • ~ 110h lost near apogee • Cal. RXJ1856.6-3754  42 ks lost in REV 1432 Maria Santos-Lleo

  6. Instrument Operations • RGS2 single node readout, since rev. 1408: 16 Aug 2007 • Pile-up: if strong emission lines: higher than expected • Radiation monitoring not possible with RGS2 (under investigation) • OM: review of slew constraints • Possibility to reduce by 2 (current: Earth 10°, Moon 7°) • Slow Slew Survey • Slowest slows 5°/h using close loop slews (20s+2-4° slews) • Overhead (time between slews and RWB) under investigation • EPIC: action from UG: 2007-06-07/14: On the EPIC team to report on the impact of reducing the overhead for EPIC-pn thin, medium and thick filter exposures in modified mosaicing mode, by using a fixed offset table Maria Santos-Lleo

  7. SAS & XSA • SAS 7.1 released in July 2007 • Patch: eexpmap • Patch to be released this week • rgsframes (for single node) • arfgen / backscale - support for masks - asked by users • epreject upgrade • some very minor fixes (test lines printouts suppression  + inclusion of forgotten parameter change in rgsproc) • Next release : ~ end spring 2008, with:epic_lccorr, rgs analysis using wavelength grid, and will be (most probably) based on gcc4 and include version for 64 bit machines. • XSA 4.0 released in August 2007 • Full, uniform, reprocessing • Science products • 2XMM catalogue: 360□ :247000 det., ~192000 unique • ~ 6x10-15 cgs in soft 0.2-2 keV (typical sensitivity) • ~1.5x10-14 cgs in hard 0.2-2 keV • Slew Survey catalogue 1.1: 20% of sky, ~4300 sources • Next release in ~ March 2008: dedicated to OM Maria Santos-Lleo

  8. Users FeedbacK: UG recommendations • Recommendation 2007-06-08/39: The priority for timing modes of EPIC-pn needs to be focused on solving the current problems of the timing and burst calibration. Only after they are fixed, the UG would be glad to revise its recommendation about the modified timing. For the time being, the modified timing mode should only be made available on a case by case basis (Policies and Procedures updated for AO7) • Recommendation 2007-06-08/45: The UG recommends that the Background Working Group makes a study of the needs for closed filter data Maria Santos-Lleo

  9. Scientific Highlights • `The Next Decade’ workshop • Presentations on-line • Papers received, review process started • Press releases: • 19 so far in 2007 • Good for PR and mission extension discussion Let us know about your results to make press releases ! • Publications and citations keep on as expected • About 300 papers per year Maria Santos-Lleo

  10. Scientific Highlights: Public Outreach I Maria Santos-Lleo

  11. in 2007 so far 19 ESA science and technology news releases Scientific Highlights: Public Outreach II Maria Santos-Lleo

  12. Mission Extension Both AWG and SSAC recommended XMM-Newton extension up to end 2012. Decision on the 13th of November, SPC Maria Santos-Lleo

  13. Next XMM-Newton Conference • The X-ray Universe 2008 • Date and venue TBD by mid November • Sevilla or Granada • 26-31 May or 9-14 June • (UG: 7-8 May, 2008) Maria Santos-Lleo
