  2. Computer Viruses What is a virus? A virus is a type of computer program which can copy itself and infect your computer. It can also try and damage your software, your hardware and files but you can eventually get rid of them. What damage can a virus do? A virus can do a variety of different things to your computer including; crashing your computer, freezing it, deleting your software, getting you to download programs and spread itself into different files.   3. Viruses Common types of viruses: • TROJAN HORSE • I LOVE YOU • WORMS • HAPPY 99 • MELISSA • MACRO How can you stop yourself from getting viruses? To stop your computer from getting viruses you can download anti-virus software’s. Do not open any pop-ups as they could contain viruses. There are also many viruses which come from e-mails. If you do not know who the e-mails are from do not open them. Types of Anti-Virus software: AVG McAfee Norton Avast

  4. What is Hacking? Hacking is unauthorised use of someone else’s computer and network. They an find out your details and change or delete your documents. Hacking Damage…. This depends upon what programs are in your Computer but different programs can do different amounts of damage. This means that if a hacker can't do something using the program, he can easily put something else onto your computer that can. Hackers can see everything you are doing, and can see any file on your disk. Hackers can write new files, delete files, edit files, and do basically anything to a file that he wants.

The best way to prevent your computer being hacked is by setting passwords (that are not easy to guess and you can also add lower case, upper case and numbers to your password) to every documents and files that are important to you and your computer! Remember to take all of this into account!!!

  6. What is a Backup? Computer backup is the storing of data on your computer onto other media besides your hard disk to prepare for the event that data is lost or destroyed on your computer. The reason that we make computer backups is to protect against the event that something happens to damage our files so they are no longer usable. If we have backups of our files, then we can restore these files to our computer through our backups. You can copy your files, documents, images, portfolios or microchips on to….   7. Why is it important to back up your work? It is important to back up any work you do on a computer because of any data becomes corrupt or is lost via deletion or virus it is gone forever. Backups What can you back up your work on? You could back up your work onto any storage device that is separate from the computer you are working on e.g. Floppy disk, USB stick or a DVD.

  8. How can you keep your backups secure? • Do backups regularly. • If backing up onto a CD or DVD then make sure they are in a fireproof case and waterproof. • If backing up onto another computer ensure it is located on a different premises.
