  1. Bus Stop Proximity StudyAn Application of Geographic Information Systems Adam Parast Kendra Hartstrom April Pust Sean Liner

  2. Objectives • Analyze population density along selected Metro bus routes • Use this data to determine the number of people who live within a five minute walk of a bus stop or five minute drive of a park and ride

  3. Data Used All data used was for King County and the layers included: • Population density • Bus route locations • Park and Ride locations • Bus stop locations

  4. Analysis The following steps were taken to complete this analysis: • Bus stop data was related to route data • Buffers were created around the intersections of bus routes and bus stops • Two separate proximity buffers were created • Within 5 minute walk of a bus stop • Within 5 mile drive of a Park and Ride • Using the population density and buffer area, the population along each bus route was determined

  5. Results and Conclusions • Populations were determined for Metro’s 49, 255, 554, 101, and 358 routes. This data is shown in the table below.

  6. Results and Conclusions • The 255 had the highest population along it’s route with 184,356 people. However, it stops at 6 Park and Rides (the most of any of the selected routes) • The 49 had the lowest population with nearly 70,000 people, but stops at zero Park and Rides along it’s route.
