  8. How this initiative is different • NOT a 10-person small group activity. A 4000-community activity. • NOT a one-off initiative. A sustainable action. • NOT a small-locality initiative. A pan-Kolkata effort. • NOT just our community initiative. Partner other communities

MSB Educational Institute Students /teachers of Classes VII to X and Ezzi Scout members Cleaned inside and outside their school Waste was divided into recyclable and non-recyclable components Kabrastan Cleaning initiative by Ezzi Scouts, Tolaba (youth) members, Saifee Hall and others Trimmed the grass and cleared debris

  11. Saifee Masjid, Brabourne Road • Cleaning initiative by Ezzi Scouts • Addressed Brabourne Road and Pollock Street • Cleaned roofs, balconies and mounds • 25 kgs litter removed Topsia • Cleaning initiative by Ezzi Scouts

  12. Phase one • Objective to clean, paint, revamp and transform areas of majority presence • A 365-day initiative • Work with and engage local residents • Make all improvements sustainable • Work with KMC and other agencies

Proposed action plan • Clean Topsia canal of litter; treat the water; reduce malarial impact • Work with hawkers in Brabourne Road and Chandni Chowk to dump litter in bins • Work with KMC cleaners to coordinate garbage evacuation • Create flower pans on electrical poles (as done abroad) • Clean heritage sites

  14. Phase two • Clean – beautify – sustain • Engage with other communities • Share learnings • Inspire them to replicate our action • Collaborate with other communities to clean other areas

  15. Help needed from KMC • Garbage trucks to help evacuation • Permission to clean canals, streets etc. • Give us specific projects to work on

  16. Overview • Community action could be something KMC could seriously look at • Communities represent building blocks of change • Communities driven by pride • Pride can be translated into civic improvement • Create competition between communities
