  2. Edits for Paragraphs • With your red pen, find every time you mention the word “Holocaust” or “holocaust.” Circle them. • The Holocaust is the specific event in history; therefore, it is proper noun. • If you have “holocaust,” make your corrections now.

Edits for Paragraphs • With your red pen, find every time you mention the word “Nazi” or “Nazis.” Circle them. • “Nazi” should be capitalized  Nazi, not nazi • “Nazis” should NOT have an apostrophe in it  Nazis, not Nazi’s • If you have one that’s possessive (something belongs to the Nazis), it should be Nazis’. • If you’re unsure, raise your hand.

  4. Edits for Paragraphs • With your red pen, find every time you mention the word “Jew” or “jew” and the word “Jewish” or “jewish.” Circle them. • Jew is a proper noun. It needs to be capitalized. • Jewish is a proper adjective. It needs to be capitalized.

Edits for Paragraphs • Highlight every number—spelled out and written—in yellow. • Any whole number under 100 must be spelled out. • About 50 soldiers arrested Jews in the streets.  NO! • About fifty soldiers arrested Jews in the streets.  YES! • Numbers over one word long must have a hyphen. • Total population of the city after the war was sixty two.  NO! • Total population of the city after the war was sixty-two.  YES! • Dates do not count. Dates can be left alone. You would say 1938, not nineteen 38. • Never start a sentence with a numeral! • 1940 was when Holland was invaded.  NO! • Holland was invaded in 1940.  YES! • 13,459 Jews survived the Holocaust in Greece.  NO! • Thirteen thousand four hundred fifty-nine Jews survived the Holocaust.  NO! • In Greece, 13,459 Jews survived the Holocaust.  YES!

Numbers (continued) • Decimals are fine. • Poland’s population of Jews was 3.3 million. • Percentages are fine, for the most part. • If you have a number with the % sign, that’s fine. • Only 5% of the population survived. • Polish communities were demolished, losing over 50% of its Jewish population. • If you spell out “percent,” you must also spell out the numbers. • The website estimates 2 percent escaped.  NO! • The website estimates two percent escaped.  YES! • If you have something like “8th century” or 17th century”: • You must spell out the number: • Jews arrived in Belgium no later than the eighth century. • Jewish life and culture in the seventeenth century was prosperous.

  7. Edits for Paragraphs • Highlight every contraction (i.e. don’t, can’t, etc.) in green. • In formal writing and academic writing, contractions are to be written as two words (unless in a direct quotation): • can’t = cannot • don’t = do not • should’ve = should have • etc. • Questions?

It needs to have a third-person point-of-view
