  1. The Comma A bit more in-depth

  2. Items in a list • Talked about this last week. • What’s the difference between: • I called the office, the nurse, and the janitor when a student puked. • I called the office, the nurse and the janitor when a student puked. The nurse and the janitor are not part of a group.

  3. Coordinating Conjunctions F A N B O Y S or nd or ut r et o • Clauses are different parts of a sentence • You only use comma when you use a coordinating conjunction when connecting two independent clauses • Let’s take a closer look

  4. Clauses An independent clause has a subject and a verb and is a complete thought. Mr. Mason rode his dragon to school today. subj. verb It burned a village on the way. subj. verb

  5. Connecting Them Using one of the coordinating conjunctions, can you make these two independent clauses into one compound sentence? You may have to change them slightly. Mr. Mason rode his dragon to school today. It burned a village on the way.

  6. Mr. Mason was upset that he rode his dragon to school today, for it burned a village on the way. Mr. Mason rode his dragon to school today, and it burned a village on the way. Mr. Mason neither rode his dragon to school today, nor did it burn a village on the way. Mr. Mason rode his dragon to school today, but it did not burn a village on the way.

  7. Coordinate Adjectives Adjectives describe or modify a noun or pronoun. What are some examples?

  8. Coordination When they work together to modify the same word, they are coordinate adjectives The dark, chilly, damp cave had a dozen bears in it. The translucent ghost lived in a bright, warm mansion. Centaurs like breezy, sunny days on the plains.

  9. However… • The cold December wind chilled me to my bones. • In this case, cold is describing December wind. • Not coordinating conjunctions. • Let’s change the settings on the old microwave oven. • How can you tell? • Try to put an “and” between them • Try reversing the order

  10. Try it out Put commas into these sentences where they belong. I ordered a pizza with pepperoni cheese mushrooms lizard brains scrap metal and anchovies. There was an old rusty tire swing hanging from a chain. I had to go to the castle so I stole a motorcycle.
