  1. GUN AND KNIFE CRIME 11 MILLION By young people at Choice Café, South Wigston, Leicestershire

  2. The voice of England’s children and young people [11 MILLION] are now working against Gun and Knife Crime. Children and young people chose Violence, Abuse and Bullying as the main theme of work for this year. This was first recognised when 110 children and young people were questioned, and highlighted further when we spoke to more children of various ages spanning the country. After fully exploring each of the issues individually and in greater detail, gun and knife crime was selected to be the priority that we together will work against.

  3. 11 MILLION NB: The Home Office, by means of the Connected Fund, are now giving over £1.25 million in grants to local community groups in order to support working against gun, knife and gangs. This means we need all your thoughts, and for you to contribute your ideas. It will help guide and highlight areas where you think the money will be best spent to help reduce gun and knife crime.

  4. 11 MILLION FACTS

  5. 11 MILLION • FACT: • 19 young people aged 13 to 17 were killed in shootings and stabbings in London alone in 2007. Taking into consideration the age range here, it’s easy to recognise how serious this issue is and the help that is needed to help reduce these figures. If we were to multiply this figure for every city in Britain (66 cities) it would equal 1,254 people. This is shockingly high when thinking about how young these people are and the bright future they should have lived.

  6. 11 MILLION • FACT: • 30% of children excluded from school carried a flick knife at some time. Whether for personal protection or planned violent attacks, this fact needs to be explored - to look into the reason why this is evident. If we were to do so, it could help us target specific areas to hopefully start to decrease the chances of Gun and Knife Crime.

  7. 11 MILLION • FACT: • Dispatches documentary revealed that a quarter of all gun crimes in 2007 were committed by under 18’s. Again, it is vital to recognise the proportion of young people that have committed gun crimes. Maybe you could help share your ideas on why you may think this is?

  8. 11 MILLION • FACT: • The home office says: gun related crime kills, maims and intimidates. As well as being frequently linked to gang activity and the illegal drugs trade in the UK. With this fact, it’s important to realise that not only is death an effect of Gun and Knife Crime – but it also highly intimidates victims as well as maiming them. This means a victim is disfigured for the rest of their life, either by being highly disabled and/or experiencing a loss of a limb as a result of this type of crime.
