  3. Construction • Demand for construction equipment & materials • Over 33,000 residential houses built in 2006. • Finnish construction companies have strong links into Russia and the Baltic States.

  4. Urban Regeneration • Port of Helsinki to move to new site in 2008 • Existing site will be remediated & land-use will be changed to residential & leisure use • One of Europe’s largest regeneration projects. • West Harbour area will be converted into residential area for 22,000 people.

  5. Shipbuilding • Akeryards based in Turku, Rauma and Helsinki. • Currently have 29 cruise ships/ferries on order book. Also icebreakers • Supplier to Royal Caribbean and Carnival • Genesis 2 – 8,400 passengers and crew • Increasingly using turnkey suppliers

  6. Leisure Marine • 187,888 lakes • Net Sales increase of 17.9% • Value of imported boats 36 million euros • Demand for marine equipment • Several boat builders in Finland – e.g. Swan Nautor; Bella Boats; Bellamer; Finnmarin and Terhi. • Russian buyers often source in Finland

  7. Currently building 5th nuclear power station. Suggestions that a 6th may be built. New gas turbine plant being built in Espoo Energy efficiency in industry Reducing carbon emissions - Kyoto Oil refining company’s engineering arm looking for contractors to work with them on global projects. Energy opportunities

  8. Rail opportunities • High speed rail link to Russia – Karelia Trains • Upgrading of tracks • Increasingly outsourcing maintenance on certain areas of track • Metro Extension from Helsinki to Espoo • Freight market liberalised this year

  9. Consumer Goods • Demand for high quality goods • Food & Drink – Daleside sold more beer in Helsinki in a weekend than in Wigan and Bolton combined. • British cheese • Stockmann is main department store – also has stores in Baltic States and Russia • Fashion – high quality and unique design

  10. Mining • Only EU Member State where mining activity is expanding • Current mining activity focused on gold, diamonds, base metals, and zinc. • Several UK companies already active. • Excellent geological databases • Ministry of Trade & Industry release tenders for exploitation of mines.
