  6. Information for mentors • The role of a mentor • To provide advice and support to applicants on the content and structure of their application • Be willing to provide open and honest advice • Be prepared for different responses to feedback • Encourage applicants to present a clear and logical case for promotion • Ensure applicants have provided sufficient evidence and are able to demonstrate their outcomes and achievements • Remember this is the mentee’s application: - You are not responsible for the outcome of the application - You are providing guidance, not a guarantee of success

  7. Information for mentors • Attributes of a strong application • Readiness for promotion • Staff considering applying for promotion will normally discuss and plan with their supervisor in the years leading up to the application • Applicants should be able to provide evidence that they have the capacity to perform at the level they are applying for • Applicants should treat the application the same way they would a job application i.e. • Does the application address the criteria in the MSALs? • Have main points been highlighted? • Is it formatted correctly? • Are there adequate referees and endorsement?

  8. Information for mentors • Attributes of a strong application 2. Presenting their case • Applicants should provide a well constructed case to demonstrate their contributions which are relevant to the level of promotion • The summary statement should be an organised, well balanced narrative that clearly demonstrates the case to the committee for them to consider the applicant’s strengths, contributions and achievements against the criteria
