  5. January 18: Albert DeSalvo, the "Boston Strangler," is convicted of numerous crimes and is sentenced to life in prison. Albert DeSalvo was considered the Boston Strangler, responsible for killing 13 women, but he was never charged. The Boston Strangler was an alleged serial killer in Boston, Massachusetts between June 14, 19XX, and January 4, 19XX, when thirteen single women between the ages of 19 and 85 were murdered in the Boston area. July 23: • 12th Street Riot: In Detroit, Michigan, one of the worst riots in United States history begins on 12th Street in the predominantly African American inner city (43 killed, 342 injured and ~1,400 buildings burned). Death Toll Over the period of five days, 43 people died, of whom 33 were black. The other damages: • 467 injured: 182 civilians, 167 Detroit police officers, 83 Detroit firefighters, 17 National Guard troops, 16 State Police officers, 3 U.S. Army soldiers. • 7231 arrested: 6528 adults, 703 juveniles; the youngest, 4, the oldest, 82.
