  1. Sonnets • There are three types of sonnets • All sonnets have 14 lines

  2. Italian or Petrarchan Sonnets • Named after Francis Petrarch • 14 lines • Rhyme scheme = • abbaabba cd cd cd • Abbaabba cdecde

  3. Italian or Petrarchan Sonnet cont. • Division of lines = • An octave – first 8 lines (abba abba) • A sestet – last six lines (cdcdcd) – sestet’s rhyme can vary • Volta = turn – occurs between lines 8 and 9

  4. Italian or Petrarchan Sonnet cont. • Meter = iambic pentameter • Iambic penatmeter -> unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable • 10 syllables total, 5 unstressed, five stressed

  5. Italian or Petrarchan Sonnet cont. • Structure • Octave = presents a problem, asks a question • Sestet = offers solution, resolution, or amplification • Volta = turning point

  8. English or Shakespearean sonnets cont. • Structure • Divided into quatrains of four lines • There are 3 quatrains • There is 1 couplet at the end • Quatrains build the idea, situation, or problem • Couplet offers a summary, a reversal, or an amplification

  10. Spenserian Sonnet • Similar to Shakespearean sonnet form • 14 lines • Iambic pentameter • 3 quatrains and 1 couplet • Rhyme scheme = abab bcbc cdcd ee

  11. Modern American Sonnets • Have 14 lines • Do not necessarily stick rigidly to either structure – organization or rhyme
