  2. What is European Sources Online? European Sources Online(ESO) provides access to a broad range of information about the European Union and wider Europe. Information about institutions, structures, countries, regions, people, policies and processes can be found by using this online resource. Click on map to see list of EU members

  5. Web directory The Web Directory is a handy guide to European Union information on the internet. It lists all the key websites to European information and structures them by subject areas, which makes it easy to navigate.

  6. News and analysis This page is dedicated to all the news type information added to ESO. It contains 2 sections: Newspaper searchand Weekly bulletin.

  7. Newspaper search This search allows you to search specifically for the newspaper content licensed from ESO i.e. European Voice, selected articles from the Financial Times and the Economist.

  8. Weekly bulletin This is the area where all the latest information added to ESO is posted. It is divided in the following sections: In Focus, Topic Guides, Development in European Information Issues, Book Reviews and Briefings. From this page you can access the whole archive of Development in European Information Issues as well as Book Reviews.

  9. Information guides The Information Guides section is where you can access Topic Guides, In Focus articles as well as the Introduction to the EU guide.

  10. Topic guides Topic Guides are structured, frequently updated information guides to key European Union institutions and policies. Each guide has a narrative introduction, plus hyperlinks to further sources of information within ESO and on external websites. In Focus articles are similar but cover specific events or initiatives.

  11. How to access ESO ESO can only be accessed via Athens. Double click on the Athens for education icon. (This should be available on the student desktop whenever you log in to the College network.) Click on the My Athens hyperlink. (on the left hand of the screen).   13. How to access ESO (cont.) You will then be asked for a username and password. As access to Athens is restricted, Stow students use the following username and password on campus: Username stwstudent02 Password learning05 Click on the Login button. Scroll down the page and then click on the European Sources Onlinehyperlink, which will give you immediate access to the ESO resources.

  15. Searching ESO There are 3 types of searches available: Search ESO – basic search Advanced Search – multiple keyword search Expert User Page – alternative homepage

  16. Search ESO Search ESO This is basic search for information by using either a keyword or a phrase. Simply type in your keyword or topic and click on the Go icon to show results.

  17. Advanced search Advanced Search This is for a more refined search, as it uses multiple keywords. You can search records using a combination of the following: author, ISBN number, title, series title, subject, keyword, source origin, source type and date.

  18. Expert user page Expert User Page This page is an alternative home pagewhich you can decide to be your default home page. All the features are the same as the standard home page except for Search ESO, which allows you to refine your search to suit you.

  19. Results Search results (hits) are displayed in a list – the first 25 on one page. The hits are in reverse chronological order so that you always find the latest information added to the database. The title of the hit is the hyperlink to the full text article. The source, i.e. the publication where it appeared, is shown beside each hit for referencing purposes. Results can also be viewed by category e.g. policy making, legislation, news source, background, statistics. Click here to see the categories.

  21. Glossary AthensAn authentication system which allows colleges to access a variety of electronic information resources using a single username and password. My AthensWhere the Stow College username and passwordneed to be entered to allow access to online resources on campus. Hyperlink A link (usually underlined) in a document to information within that document or another document. KeywordThe search term or topic you are looking for. Homepage The main page of a Web site. Reverse chronological order In publication date order, with the newest at the top.
