  4. CREDITS • CREDIT OVERVIEW • WHAT IS A CREDIT? CREDITS ARE THE VALUE OR (POINTS) THAT EACH CLASS IS WORTH. • HOW ARE CREDITS COUNTED? CREDITS ARE EARNED EACH SEMESTER YOU PASS A CLASS. (Most classes are worth 0.5 credits) • WHY ARE CREDITS SO IMPORTANT? EVERY STUDENT NEEDS A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OF CREDITS TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. • HOW MANY CREDITS DO YOU NEED TO GRADUATE? STUDENTS NEED 23 CREDITS TO GRADUATE

  6. OCLEX (OUT OF CLASS LEARNING EXPERIENCE • SO WHAT EXACTLY IS OCLEX? SIMPLY PUT (OUT OF CLASS LEARNING EXPERIENCE), IS THE HOURS THAT YOU EARN WHILE DOING SOME TYPE OF OUT OF CLASS WORK. THE HOURS THAT YOU EARN CAN COME FROM ALL SORTS OF “WORK” BE IT, VOLUNTEER, JOB, SCHOOL PROJECTS OR SOMETHING IN BETWEEN. STUDENTS NEED 200 CLOCK HOURS TO STATISFY THIS REQUIREMENT OCLEX HOURS CAN BE COMBINED FROM MANY PLACEMENTS ALL OCLEX PLACEMENTS NEED TO BE APPROVED BY YOUR COUNSELOR, ADVISOR OR PRINCIPAL.

  7. Grade Point Average or GPA • WHAT IS A GPA? A GPA IS THE AVERAGE SCORE OF ALL YOUR GRADES • HOW DO YOU CALCULATE YOUR GPA? USING THIS SCALE: A=4PTS, B=3PTS, C=2PTS, D=1PT, F= 0PTS USING THE SCALE ABOVE • ADD THE POINTS OF ALL YOUR GRADES • THEN DIVIDE THAT NUMBER BY THE NUMBER OF CLASSES YOU HAD. • YOU RESULT SHOULD BE YOUR GPA

  8. COLLEGE: 2 YEARS • WHAT COMMUNITY COLLEGES OFFER • STUDENTS CAN EARN PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES • STUDENTS CAN EARN AN ASSOCIATE DEGREE (A.A. OR A.S.) • STUDENTS CAN TRANSFER TO A FOUR YEAR UNIVERSITY TO EARN A BACHELOR OF ART (B.A.) OR BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (B.S.) DREGEE OR POST GRADUATE DEGREES. • SAT and/or ACT are NOT required for a community college.

  9. 4 YEAR COLLEGE ADMISSIONS STANDARDS • GPA – Typically average in academic core on a 4.0 scale (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Language) • Course Selection (rigor; difficulty level) – Selective colleges are looking at the strength or rigor of your courses throughout high school, including your senior year. We highly recommend seniors take a minimum of 4 academics each semester- for highly selective colleges, a minimum of 5 each semester. • Test Scores (SAT and/or ACT) • Class Rank – Based on overall numeric weighted average • Extracurricular Activities – Leadership and participation in clubs, service and sports can be particularly important to competitive colleges • College Application Essays – Required essays on the college application are important because they demonstrate your writing ability and give the college more information about you. Please seek advice when writing an essay and make sure to proofread for errors • Letters of Recommendation – Request teacher recommendation two weeks before needed and counselor recommendation at least two weeks prior to the school’s deadline • Resumes – Contains academic info., honors & awards, extracurricular activities, work/volunteer experience, etc.
