  2. Introduction • The thruster involved works by the principle of chemical decomposition • Catalyst renders the mixture unstable • Propellant decomposes, producing thrust

  3. Initial planning Problem Solution Three-axis movement sensing Modular support cradle Either a vacuum housing or made to fit inside an existing chamber • Small size • Milli-newton thrust • Must be done in a vacuum

  4. Sensing • Two possible methods • Load cell/resistor strain gauge • Piezo-resistors • Other methods include – optical sensing (deflection of light)

  5. Cradle factors to consider • Ridged mounting system • 3 connection points • Fixed against motion in one direction • Free floating motion in other two directions • Quick installation/replacement • Custom built enclosure with minimal tolerances to eliminate “slop”

  6. Costs • Sensors Uniaxial resistive strain gauge(matched to aluminum) - $27.50 per pack of 5 • Cradle Aluminum tubing for frame -
