The modern municipal district covers an area of about 1800 acres, with 2/3 of this area lying along 6.5km of shoreline.

  6. Kalamaria Today • The population has risen steeply from just 14,000 in the 1947 census to 87,312 in the most resent census of 2000. It is now the second most populous municipality in the Greater Thessaloniki area- indeed, in the hole of northern Greece-and the ninth most populous in the entire country.

  7. The district’s economy depends heavily on tourism and leisure activities. There is commercial activity, too, in and around the historic centre of the district, and some light industry, mainly processing, in the outlying areas. Kalamaria Today
