Thriving as Writers in Agile Environments

In "How Writers Can Thrive in Agile," Gavin Austin presents a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities writers face in Agile development. The talk identifies common issues such as misunderstood roles (Product Owner, Scrum Master) and time constraints due to extensive meetings. Solutions include promoting patience, providing Agile training for new employees, and encouraging adaptability by focusing on Agile benefits. The resulting benefits of a personable environment, clearer communication through daily interactions, and fixed deadlines empower writers, enabling them to balance work and personal life effectively.

  1. How Writers Can Thrive in Agile Gavin Austin 2013 Agile Conference

  2. Outline • Problems • Solutions • Benefits

  3. Problems • Terminology • Product Owner? Scrum Master? Daily Scrum? • Meetings • Sprint planning, Sprint review, Sprint retrospective, and Daily “stand up” . • Time • Spend more time on Agile and less time writing documentation.

  4. Solutions • Encourage Patience • No one expected a perfect transition. • Provide Training • Every new employee in product development is required to attend Agile training. • Learn to Adapt • It’s easier to adapt to an Agile environment when writers review its benefits instead of its challenges.

  5. Benefits • Personable Environment • People get to know who they’re working with. • Clearer Communication • Team members meet daily and are encouraged to ask questions and voice concerns. • Fixed Deadlines • People can plan their lives outside of work (and finally take that vacation!) without wondering if a work schedule will interfere.
