Durham Northumberland Chapter President’s Report Jan-March 2014 END: Engage with registered nurses and nursing students to stimulate membership and promote the value of belonging to their professional organization. Jan 16 : General Meeting at the Regional Municipality of Durham, attended by 17 members. Presentation of RN Emeritus and Quarter Century Pin . Feb 13: ENO meeting. Finalize list of AGM Consultation Reps Feb 26-29: RNAO Queen’s Park Day & Assembly Meeting . Attended by 3 ENO members and a student rep. Detailed Report from Membership ENO 2014 Target: 6% growth by October 31, 2014: 3084 ( or 460 needed to reach target) END: RNAO advances the role and image of nurses as members of a vital, knowledge-driven, caring profession, and as significant contributors to health. Preparation for Nursing Week. Detailed report by Political Action ENO.

  3. Durham Northumberland Chapter President’s Report (2) END: RNAO speaks out on emerging issues that impact on nurses and the nursing profession, health and health care. Response to RNAO Action Alert Discussion of Emerging Challenges for RN Employment in Oshawa END: RNAO influences healthy public policy to positively impact the determinants of health, supporting Medicare and strengthening a publicly funded, not- for –profit health care system Queen’s Park Day Participation.   6. Durham Northumberland Chapter Membership Report Total number of Members: 2013= 29242014=2614  Email meeting invitations sent to all members for January chapter meeting. A special invitation for the Emeritus and Quarter Century Pin and Certificate members was emailed to the members for the January meeting. Two members were present and a special celebration and presentation took place for Maureen Gmitrowicz and Sepelene Deonarine.

  7. Durham Northumberland Chapter Membership Report-2 Two emails were sent to members regarding this meeting. We are so pleased with the turnout of 58 members at this event. A Record! Please check our website on the RNAO page for future meetings and lets hope the enthusiasm continues. In collaboration with Helen (workplace liaison ENO) a list of our chapters members’ places of employment was received and summarized. An email and invitation to participate in our chapter was sent to those who did have a workplace liaison.

  8. Durham Northumberland Chapter Policy & Political Action Report Betsy, Kim, Grace and I attended Queen's Park Day on February 27th, 2014. On February 26th, prior to the meeting we had a prep time to review RNAO’s four main issues. They are: Increasing the Minimum Wage to $14.00 per hour, Health System Restructuring, which deals with Local Health Integration Networks (to include home care, primary care and public health, with the exception of community health centres; Investment in Registered Nurses and Renewal of the Federal Health Accord.

  9. Durham Northumberland Chapter Policy & Political Action Report -2 On Queen’s Park Day, Grace, another student from UFT and I met with MPP Christine Elliott to discuss RNAO main issues. She was late for the breakfast so we spent some of the time discussing the issues and becoming acquainted with one another. One of the students focused on Investing in RNs, Grace focused on Increasing the Minimum Wage to $14.00 per hour and I discussed Renewal of the Federal Health Accord with Christine Elliott. She was delighted to meet with the students and listened to their concerns and examples. This was an enlightening experience for the students, who had never attended a Queen’s Park Day. Following the breakfast meeting, we went to the Gallery viewing for Questions and Answer Period.

Durham Northumberland Chapter Policy & Political Action Report-3 On Friday 28thFebruarywe attended the Assembly Meeting. Rhonda and Doris gave their report including Membership Targets (ours is 460 members for 2014) & Members Voices Themes. The Communications Department provided and In-Service Session on Connecting with Media. Members of the Communication Dept gave many strategies that we can use to connect with the media. They also reinforced that they are available to assist us with any media coverage, news release or letter to the Editor of Newspapers.  The last item for the day was a presentation on Dying with Dignity. Following this presentation, we had a round table discussion on pros and cons of this issue.

Durham Northumberland Chapter Policy & Political Action Report - 4 Preparation for Nursing Week Celebrations Nursing Week Theme : “Nursing – A Leading Force for Change.” Week of March 10th, invitation letters were sent to all our MPPs in Durham Northumberland Region, to attend Nursing Week Celebrations: Take Your MPP to Work and Breakfast on May 16th from 7:30 am to 10:00 am at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. Letters were sent to MPPs Christine Elliott (Whitby-Oshawa), Jerry Ouellette, (Oshawa), John O’Toole (Bowmanville), Joe Dickson (Ajax), Tracey McCharles (Pickering-Toronto), Laurie Scott (Lindsay) and Rob Milligan (Cobourg). MPPs John O’Toole and Rob Milligan have already confirmed their attendance of Nursing Week Celebrations.

Durham Northumberland Chapter Policy & Political Action Report - 5 Preparation for Nursing Week Celebrations Letters to eight mayors (Steve Parish, Town of Ajax; Chuck Mercier, Township of Scugog; Terry Clayton, Township of Brock; Adrian Foster, Municipality of Clarington; David Ryan, City of Pickering; John Henry, City of Oshawa; Pat Perkins, Town of Whitby and Gerri Lynn O’Connor, Uxbridge) in Durham Northumberland Region. We are asking our mayors to proclaim Nursing Week from May 12th to 18th, 2014.

Durham Northumberland Chapter Policy & Political Action Report -6 Preparation for Nursing Week Celebrations With the assistance of Barbara Mildon, CNA President and Vice President Professional Practice, Human Resources, Research and Chief Nurse Executive of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, we were able to procure a Conference Room B & C at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences for our Nursing Week Celebrations. Media Advisory on Renewal of the Federal Government Healthcare Accord, was sent to our Media Department at Home Office for review and feedback. Response to RNAO Action Alert on “Retain and Hire RNs and Increase Minimum Wage”, was sent to the Premier, Standing Committee on Finance and Economic and other political provincial leaders.

  14. Durham Northumberland Chapter Finance Account balance: end of February $11,010 Reimbursement for last years membership: $5240 Expected remaining expenditures to June 2014(approximates)1. Harpos: $20002. MPP breakfast: $16003. Volunteer activity(includes donation and walk in May): $15004. Student support for AGM: $400

Durham Northumberland Chapter Communication Participated in Queen’s Park event Attended Chapters Presidents meeting Working with resources from home office to learn how to leverage social media as a communication tool With support from home office, have confirmed design for vertical banner for display at chapter events. In process of sourcing out a printer and comparing costs.

  16. Durham Northumberland Chapter Information Management Website continues to be updated with the chapter activities Minutes and financial statement available Upcoming information will include the Mental Health “Walk for Wellness” on Saturday June 7th, 2014. The chapter will be sponsoring a watering station. All members are encourage to participate.

  17. Durham Northumberland Chapter Workplace Liaison Collaborating together with Membership ENO on reaching out via email to members at workplaces where there are not currently workplace liaisons. This is currently in process with the assistance and support of Jody Smith from the RNAO head office. I had the pleasure of meeting Jody in person on March 25th, as she spent the day at Lakeridge Health along with a representative from the RPNAO head office, to support a PLP Information Booth that was organized through the collaborative efforts of LH Nursing Professional Practice, the RPNAO workplace liaison at LH and me.

  18. Durham Northumberland Chapter Student Liaison UOIT students have membership included in registration fees with University. Looked for ways to help students involve themselves more in RNAO: Interest Group Event on Nov. 7, 2013 … over 100 students and 18 interest groups …. IrmajeanBajnok. Students attended September Interest Group and Presidents Assembly Meeting, Queen’s Park, and plans to attend AGM. Speaking at NSO Leadership Luncheon .
