When Arnold Lobel was young he was sick a lot. He was absent many days in kindergarten, first and second grades. When he came back to school in third grade he drew pictures for his classmates and told them stories. He found this to be a good way to make friends.
He had a wife, named Anita, and two children, Adam and Adrianne. Anita was also a wonderful artist.
Mr. Lobel got many of his ideas for characters from cartoons his children use to watch.
He said that taking books out of the library was one of the things he loved to do most when he was a child.
Some of Mr. Lobel's most popular books are about Frog and Toad. They share walks together and yummy ice cream cones. They swim together and plan surprises for each other. These books teach us a lot about friendship.
Two of his other books won the Caldecott Honor Medal. His own book Frog and Toad are Friends won in 1971 and Hildilid's Night by Cheli Duran Ryan won in 1972.
Arnold Lobel won the Caldecott Medal for his book Fables in 1981.
Frog and Toad Together won the Newbery Honor Book in 1973.
Here are some other books by this author.
