  2. What is MVRT? • Established in 1997 • Group of 120 students that combine their ingenuity to achieve a common goal • Team is fully student led

  3. Build Robots to compete in FIRST competitions • Students inspired to use their imagination to create the vision of tomorrow • A team that withstands hardships and difficulties to build a masterpiece to the best of their ability

  4. History • Founded in 1997: MVRT has since seen wonderful growth and success • Mentors high school teams annually and recently started mentoring Lego League teams

  5. Founded in 1998. • Since then, the MVRT have received several awards, and have made it to Championships multiple times in recent years • The MVRT received an honorable 3rd place at Championships in 2001, 1stplace at the Silicon Valley Regional and UC Davis Regional in 2008, Engineering Inspiration Award at the UC Davis Regional, and the Chairman’s Award at the Silicon Valley Regional • Has mentored many robotics teams • Kehillah, Saratoga, Homestead, Cupertino, Mission San Jose, St. Francis, Harker, and Lynbrook High Schools • Mentored Lego League • Lego league is a group of 10 middle students that do similar tasks as Robotics does, but at a Junior High level

  6. Introduction to FIRST • For Inspiration and Recognition for Science and Technology was founded in 1989 • Helps students awaken their imagination and innovation potential • To encourage students to pursue science and engineering careers

Scope of FIRST • 49 Regional Competitions Worldwide - Events in Brazil, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, U.S. • We compete in the Silicon Valley Regional and UC Davis Regional • National Championships in St. Louis, Missouri • Competitions include Awards for innovation, spirit, animation, and design • Over 2000 teams worldwide! • 43,125 high school students

Mechanical Division • Responsible for Mechanical Assignments • Design • Fabrication • Assembly • Wiring • Maintenance • Time Commitment • Trainings: 1 hour after school Mondays and Wednesdays through early December • Build: 3 - 4 hours everyday Jan 8th through Feb 20th • Robot is fully student constructed and designed • No Prior experience necessary

Electrical Division • Responsible for programming the robot controller using LabVIEW • Reacts to joystick/button movement • Autonomous (15 seconds) • Work with switches, servos, and potentiometers • Wire the robot • Time Commitment • Trainings: 1 hour after school Mondays and Fridays through early December • Build: 3 - 4 hours everyday Jan 8th through Feb 20th • Prior Experience is not required

  15. Public Relations Division • Ties the team to the community • Pursues the goal of instilling passion for science and technology in members of the community, especially the youth

  16. Duties of Public Relations • Recruit members to the team • Mentor FRC, FTC, and FLL teams • GATE program at Lincoln Elementary • Gain press coverage for the team • Working with other teams • Design presentations for company visits/judging at competitions

Media Division • 30 second animation • Created using 3D Studio Max • Safety Animation • Maintaining the website • Team T-shirt • Team promotional items: Flyers, Buttons, posters • What your child can gain: • Develop an artistic talent in a technological field. • Use skills and software applied in the real world industry. • Fully student manufactured animations and products.

  18. $6000 – First Competition $4000 – Second Competition $6000 – Nationals $7000 – Robot Materials $14000 – Hotel and Transportation $3000 – Printing Fees Total: $40,000 Finance Division • Obtains money to build the robot, register for competitions, and other expenses • Holds and organizes fundraisers • Writes grants to large companies • What you child can gain: • Business skills • Real world experience interacting with companies Budget

  19. Trainings • 1 Hour afterschool in F108 • Trainings begin September 20 • Mondays – Engineering (Mechanical and Electrical) • Tuesdays – Media • Wednesdays – Mechanical • Fridays – Electrical

Time Commitment • Once the build season begins Engineering members will be at school at least least till 6 PM • During the last 2 - 3 weeks of the build we will be working till 8 PM on certain days • Work longer hours during weekends and February break • We continue working everyday of the week for 6 weeks including weekends and the February Winter Break • Students are not expected to come daily, but we expect students to attend as often as possible

  21. Dinners & Snacks • We will have a snack schedule where all members staying after school will be expected to bring snacks for the other students at least once. • Engineering members will also be eating dinners at school towards the end of the build • Snack and Dinner schedules will be organized

Registration to Join • www.mvrt.com • Complete Application: Charter, Waiver, and Online Application • Due October 5th • Pay Registration Fee: • $100 applied towards registration for competitions • $20 towards Awards Night • $15 t-shirt (required) • $25 polo (optional – personalized with name) Standard Amount - $135 With Polo - $160

  23. Funding • MVRT has received major funding through corporate grant applications • MVRT has also received many corporate “matches” in the past • MVRT also readily accept donations • These donations are tax deductible • Company volunteer hours • We are always looking for parent support!
