  2. Vocabulary- Make sure yours is correct • 1. Activism (N) – An effort to promote direct social, political, economic and environmental change. • 2. Genocide(N) - the deliberate killing of people who belong to a particular racial, political, or cultural group

  3. Memoir(N) - a written account in which someone (such as a famous performer or politician) describes past experiences • Epic Hero(N)-a brave and noble character admired for great achievements or affected by grand events.(Ex. Beowulf) • Eschew(v)-to avoid (something) especially because you do not think it is right, proper, etc.

  4. Burkas(N)- a long piece of clothing that covers the face and body and that is worn by some Muslim women in public places Substantiate (V)-to establish by proof or competent evidence

  5. Feudalism(N)a social system that existed in Europe during the Middle Ages in which people worked and fought for nobles who gave them protection and the use of land in return • Serfs(N) -a person in the past who belonged to a low social class and who lived and worked on land owned by another person

  6. Nobility(N)-  the body of persons forming the noble class in a country or state 

  7. Learning Targets & Criteria • We will be able to identify what makes an effective memoir • We will be able to use descriptive language effectively to draw a reader into a non-fiction writing piece • We will use an outline to begin constructing a rough draft for the formal memoir essay assignment

  8. Goals For Today: • 1. Finish descriptive writing assignment (you got this yesterday) • Finish writing your Narrative lead • Show Ms. Gelroth the outline for your paper (Freytag’s Structure) BEFORE you start the rough draft • Begin writing rough draft of your memoir piece (SKIP LINES)

  9. Homework: FINISHED rough draft (written or typed) DUE ON MONDAY! • WHETHER YOU ARE TYPING IT OR WRITING IT YOU NEED TO SKIP LINES • IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT BY MONDAY YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO FINISH THE EDITING TASKS AT HOME.
