  1. PROPOSED CURRICULUM FOR B.Sc. IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Muhammad Taher Abuelma’atti

  2. Motivations • After running for 7 years, there is a need to fine tune the program. • Based on the self assessment results there is a need to introduce options. • Based on the college of engineering surveys, there is a need to reduce the amount of Physics and Mathematics.

  3. Constraints: 1. ABET criteria (2004/2005): a. Criterion 4: * Specify subject areas appropriate to engineering without prescribing specific courses. * Attention and time devoted to each component must be consistent with the program objectives. * Students must experience a major design experience.

  4. * The professional component must include: 1. One year (32 CHs) of a combination of college level mathematics and basic sciences appropriate to the discipline. 2. One and one-half years (48 CHs) of engineering science and engineering design topics appropriate to the filed of study. 3. Engineering sciences must provide a bridge between mathematics and basic sciences on one hand and engineering practice on the other. 4. Engineering design is a decision making process in which basic sciences, mathematics and engineering sciences are applied to meet stated needs.

  5. * The general education component must complement the technical content of the curriculum and is consistent with the program and institution objectives.

Program Criteria for EE The program must demonstrate that graduates have: 1. knowledge of probability and statistics including appropriate applications. 2. knowledge of mathematics through differential and integral calculus. 3. knowledge of advanced mathematics, including differential equations, linear algebra, complex variables and discrete mathematics. 4. basic sciences, computer science and engineering sciences as appropriate to the program objectives.

  7. Program Objectives: According to the College of Engineering surveys: • 64 % of our graduates are involved in maintenance, operation, design and manufacturing engineering. • Only 4 % of our graduates are involved in research and development.

  8. 3. 54% of the local industry are involved in petrochemical and related industries. 4. 9% are involved in power generation and distribution, 8 % in telecommunication and 6% in computer and information technology

  9. Based on the above the program objective is suggested to be: To produce a graduate with: • Solid foundation in the wide spectrum of EE subjects. • Reasonable specialization in at least one area. Such a graduate will be able to adapt himself to future changes in the discipline as well as to have an in-depth understanding of a specialized area where he can better serve his organization.

  12. Options: Students must take at least 17 CHs of EE (about 5 courses 3x3+2x4). Additional EE courses can be taken. Option 1 (Heavy Current): • Electrical Machines • Power Systems • Power Electronics • Control* • Selected courses from MATH, PHYS, ME, CE, CIM or any other department • Sub-total 32

  13. Option 2 (Light Current) • Communications and related subjects (e.g. antennas and propagation) • Electronics • Signal Processing • Control* • Selected courses from MATH, PHYS, COE, ICS, SE, CIM or any other department • Sub-total 32 Grand Total 133

  14. * Except for the CONTROL COURSES, students are NOT allowed to take EE course from both options. • ** The 32 optional courses must include additional 3 CHs of MATH or PHYS so that the total number of CHs for Science will be 32. This can be decided according to the selected optional courses.

Alternatively, the optional courses can be grouped as follows: • Group I: Electric Machines and Power Systems. • Group II: Communications and Networking. • Group III: Antennas and Propagation. • Group IV: Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits. • Group V: Microwaves and optoelectronics. • Group VI: Microcontrollers and control systems. • Group VII: Image and Digital Signal Processing. Students must take at least 17 CHs (about 5 courses) from these groups. Students must take at least two courses in at least two groups. Additional courses can be taken from other groups. ** The 32 optional courses must include additional 3 CHs of MATH or PHYS so that the total number of CHs for Science will be 32. This can be decided according to the selected optional courses.
