  2. Origins of Cocao • The Cocoa tree is native to the Americas. • Cocoa beans grow in a pod on the cocoa tree. • Evidence from Costa Rica indicates that cocoa was drank by native central Americans. • The first European to drink chocolate was Christopher Columbus.

  3. Ivory Coast • The French name for the Ivory Cost is Cote d’Ivoire. • The Ivory Coast is in West Africa. • The capital of the Ivory Coast is Abidjan. • Population is 20 million people • French is the official language

  4. Chocolate Production • Ivory Coast is known for its cocoa production. It is one of the worlds main producers of cocoa. • Ivory coast supplies 30% of the worlds cocoa production. • Large chocolate producers such as Cadbury, Hersheysand Nestle buy Ivorian cocoa.

  5. Farming • Smallholder farmers grow the crop. • The pods containing the beans are harvested and opened to separate the seeds and pulp. • The seeds are left to dry out and then sold to a chocolate buyer.
