The Root • Tension between Hutu (85% of population) and Tutsi(15%of population) began with German colonization in 1894 • Belgium took control in 1933, after WWI; discrimination favored Tutsi • Hutu political movement 1950s-60s; excluded Tutsi • 1962 Rwanda gains independence • This year marks the 20th anniversary of the genocide. The Rwandan government is holding ceremonies this week- April 7th
