SCORING CLINIC PREFACE
  • This is a PowerPoint designed to help high school scorers comply with NFHS scoring procedures.
  • First, text on this screen describes what occurs on the court. Try to make the correct entries on the scoresheet.
  • Then, a sample scoresheet on the next slide shows how to correctly score what happened. Sheet still shows “games” rather than “sets.”

volleyball scoring sample match 2012
VOLLEYBALL SCORINGSAMPLE MATCH - 2012
  • This is a match between Adams High School and Madison High School played at Madison Gym on October 1, 2012.
  • The official scorer is Teresa Jones, the R1 is Bob Boese and the R2 is Sam Breaux.
  • The scorer should be at the table 20 minutes before the first set starts.
basic information
Basic Information
  • Write in
  • Schools’ Names (at the very top of the scoresheet)
  • Date and time for the match
  • Location
  • SET number (There are 2 to 5 sets in a match based on whether it’s best of three or best of five sets to win.)
  • Your name
  • Officials’ names
  • 10 minutes before the start of the first set, each team is required to provide the scorer with a roster showing members of the team and their playing numbers. Scorer doesn’t have to do anything with this roster until lineups are provided but should tell the R2 if a roster wasn’t turned in and the deadline is approaching.

  • If you haven’t gotten the lineup for both teams when 2 minutes are left in the warm-up period, tell this to the R2.
  • If a number appears on the lineup sheet that isn’t on the team roster (remember, you should have gotten this when 10 minutes were left in the warmup period) – tell this to the R2.

  • They may still have one for another set – but only if they write down a libero number on the lineup for that set.

scoring is demanding
SCORING IS DEMANDING
  • Scoring correctly is very demanding and will take all of your concentration.
  • It is particularly important that you have an accurate scoresheet that contains all of the necessary information.
  • Try to be quick and efficient, but don’t hesitate to tell your R2 if you need something explained or need more time.
try to be neat
TRY TO BE NEAT
  • The scoresheet will start to get crowded with numbers and squares and triangles
  • The scoresheet will get more crowded with substitutions and time-outs
  • TRY TO BE NEAT
  • IT IS BETTER TO TAKE YOUR TIME AND TELL THE R2 YOU ARE NOT READY YET, THAN TO BE SLOPPY
slide25
Madison scores one point (point 6) on Adams #42’s serve (put this in a box)
  • Madison substitutes #58 for #6
remember2
REMEMBER
  • Mark the scoresheet in three (3) places for every substitution:
  • 1 - player number (add the new number)
  • 2 - box score (put S or Sx and player numbers)
  • 3 - substitutions (put a hash mark)

Adams loses the rally
  • Madison scores one point (point 9) on Adams #5's serve (put this in a box)
  • Madison’s libero (#23) replaces #8 (not a substitution) to serve.
  • Put a triangle around serving position 4 to show this is the only place the libero can serve.
  • Adams substitutes #30 for #7 (Sx)
ask if you need to
ASK IF YOU NEED TO
  • Ask the R2 “what just happened?” if you don’t know.
  • Don’t ever guess what happened.
  • If the R2 doesn’t explain what happened and there is a serve, make sure you find out what happened at the next dead ball.
  • You MUST know what’s going on all the time.
remember3
REMEMBER
  • Anything that happens during a player’s term of service is marked in the boxes following that player’s number – even if it is something the other team does.
  • Substitutions (Sx and the player’s numbers)
  • Timeouts (Tx)
  • Penalties (P and the player’s number)

  • Adams scores four more points (points 11 to 14) on #30's serve
  • Madison calls its 2nd time-out (Tx)
remember4
REMEMBER
  • Teams almost always call time-out when the other team is serving.
  • Mark Tx in the box score.
  • Write in the score at the time of the time-out in the time out box.
  • A team gets two time-outs per set. Tell the R2 when a team has used both time-outs. If the team tries to call a third time-out, tell the R2 immediately.

REMEMBER
  • You are the OFFICIAL scorer
  • You are part of the officiating team with the R1 and R2
  • Your score is the correct score when there is a conflict with the visible score that can’t be reconciled.
  • Always do your best and
  • Ask the R2 for help if you need it.
and another thing
AND ANOTHER THING… 
  • For Set #2 and beyond, teams are listed on the same side of the scoresheet matching the side of the court they’re on.
  • When the libero goes back to serve and doesn’t leave the court there must be a double replacement of 2 regular uniform players. This is not a substitution and you don’t have to mark anything unless the replacement player has never been in the set before. Tell the R2 “libero serving.”
