Research Process-Big 6 • Task definition: Know purpose & figure out what information you know & what you need to find out. • Information-seeking strategies: Where will you get your information & what are best sources? • Location & access: How will you locate your information? Is information available? Know keywords when searching using catalog, internet, & databases. • Use of information: How will you record your information? Note cards, paper, computer, camera, etc. SHOW CREDIT to sources with “Works Cited” page • Synthesis: How will you put all your information together? What will the final product look like? Know what materials you need and timeline for project (due dates). Create the finished product. • Evaluation: YOU evaluate your research paper/project before turning it in; is it complete? Is it your best work? Have cited sources? Didn’t plagiarize?

Library Resources • Encyclopedias (broad/general topic information) • Reference books (for use in library; can have librarian make copies or have teacher checkout for classroom use) • Books (use online library catalog to search for books; know KEYWORDS; can check out) • Online databases-eLibrary & Proquest

  4. Online Databases • What are they? A collection of sources that are checked for accuracy of information by a company on a multitude of topics organized on one database • Can search a variety of media: newspapers, magazines, books, maps, websites, pictures, audio-visual, & transcripts • Google or search engines can have some great information, but would you know if the info was accurate? (ex. Wikipedia-can be edited by anyone) • Know how to access from school & home

  6. “Works Cited” Page • Purpose: (1) give credit to source of information (& acknowledge work is not from “your own brain”); (2) show where reader can get more information about topic/research • Important to follow formula (like math); see Write Source 2000 text for sample • Sources should be organized in alphabetical order • Databases have a nifty feature: “citation view” that you can copy & paste into your document-formula already in place

Notice the punctuation: (colon, comma, and periods) All sources should be organized alphabetically Information Turned to Citation

Plagiarism • What is it (definition)? stealing somebody's work or idea: the process of copying another person's idea or written work and claiming it as original (his/her own) • Why is knowing important? Not only is plagiarism dishonest, it is a serious offense! Students have been expelled from college for turning in plagiarized work-even in 4th year! • Instead of plagiarizing work: • Use quotes & cite in paper (author, page #) & “Works Cited” page • Paraphrase; put information in your OWN words!! (& cite in paper & in “Works Cited” page)
