Who conducts the project? • Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration • The largest Business University in the European Union • 25,000 students, 200 researchers, partner in international networks • Research Institute for Managing Sustainability • Established in 1999 as „Research Focus“ • Interdisciplinary research team • Research areas: CSR, evaluation, governance, innovation • Interdisciplinary orientation • Leads to holistic analyses and findings • We approach CSR from a private and a public sector perspective • We conduct comparative research regarding businesses and states

A selection of recent projects on SD and CSR • European Sustainable Development Network Office (www.sd-network.eu) • EASY-ECO - Evaluation of Sustainability – EuroConferences and Trainings (www.sustainability.at/easy) • The Austrian National Strategy for Sustainable Developmentscientific editing and process consulting • Theory based evaluation of ‘EcoBusinessPlan Vienna’, Styrian Initiative for sustainable businesses and the Austrian Environmental Fund • CSR in Central-Eastern Europe in comparison with Western Europe • CSR-Austria guiding model – Process consulting and scientific editing • Stakeholder Relation Management for Sustainable Development • Development of CSR-teaching material for Austrian Universities

What is the project about? • To facilitate a structured exchange of information on EU CSR policy developments and on national CSR policies • Comparative policy analyses on three selected CSR policy issues conducted in the next 18 months • Each analysis consists of three steps: • Survey • Case studies • Synthesis • Support from a panel of experts • Discussion of results in CSR HLG meetings

Format of the policy analyses 1st step: survey Survey of all EU MS (literature, telephone survey) regarding the selected CSR policy issue • Characterize differentpolicy instruments and approaches • Derive a typology of different policy approaches • Get a first idea about success factors and challenges • Identify interesting or good practice cases

Format of the policy analyses 1st step: survey 2nd step: case studies Analyse 3-4 interesting or good practice casesidentified in the survey phase: • Highlight relevant obstacles, drivers and success factors • Facilitate an in-depth discussion of different approaches • Facilitate the discussion on policy transfer and coherence among MS

Format of the policy analyses 1st step: survey 2nd step: case studies 3rd step: synthesis Synthesize survey and case study results (cross-case analysis) • Derive hypotheses and preliminary conclusions on challenges and success factors • Facilitate an in-depth discussion by the CSR HLG • Provide outlook for subsequent analyses and assessments

  9. Six CSR policy topics • Pre-selected together with the chairs of the CSR HLG • Important topics in the context of CSR policies • They emphasise the „soft law character“ of CSR policies • Facilitate the final selection of topics for the policy analyses
