  2. Tempo is • How fast or slow the music goes • It is written above the very first measure in Italian. • The conductor sets and keeps the tempo during a piece of music!

  3. Slow Tempi • Largo - A very slow tempo • Lento – also a very slow tempo

  4. Medium Tempi • Andante – a slower, walking tempo • Moderato – slower than Allegro but faster than Andante • Allegretto – slightly slower than Allegro

  5. Fast Tempi • Allegro – a fast tempo • Presto – a very fast tempo • Prestissimo – as fast as possible

  6. A turtle would walk at which tempo? • Largo or Lento

  7. A Cheetah would run at which tempo? • Prestissimo

  8. You would walk to class at which tempo? • Andante – normal • Presto if the tardy bell was about to ring!

  9. Other Tempo Terms • a Tempo – Return to the original Tempo • Ritardando – abreviated rit., this means to gradually get slower

  10. Other Tempo Terms • m.m. – m.m stands for metronomemarking. A metronome is a device used by a musician to keep a steady speed.

  14. Other Dynamics Terms • Crescendo – Gradually get louder • Decrescendo – Gradually get softer • Dimenuendo – Gradually get softer

  16. Other Dynamic Terms • Forte piano – abbreviated fp, this means to play the note loudly at the beginning and then immediately get soft. Sometimes this is followed by a crescendo
