  1. The tabloid version of Chapter 8, Section 3 Types of Reactions

  2. Also referred to as combination or composititon Synthesis Reaction A + X → AX Examples: 4 Al + 3 O2 → 2 Al2O3 Fe + Cl2 → FeCl2 2Cr + 3O2 → 2 CrO3

  3. AX → A + X The reactant breaks down into its parts Decomposition Reeaction 2 HBr → H2 + Br2 2 FeCl3 → 2 Fe + 3 Cl2 2 N2O5 → 2N2 + 5 O2 2 KClO3 → 2 KCl + 3O2

  4. A + BX → B + AX The lone element replaces one element in the compound. (metals replace metals, non-metals replace non-metals) Single Displacement Mg + ZnBr2 → Zn + MgBr2 Br2 + 2KI → 2KBr + I2 Zn + CuCl2 → ZnCl2 + Cu

  5. Also referred to as double replacement or metathesis reaction AX + BY → AY + BX NaOH HCl → NaCl + H2O FeS + 2HCl → FeCl2 + H2S Double Displacement

  6. Hydrocarbons react with oxygen to produce CO2 and H2O always Hydrocarbons consist of hydrogen and carbon (and sometimes oxygen) CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O Combustion

  7. 2 H2O → 2 H2 + O2 C10H8 + 12 O2 → 10 CO2 + 4 H2O Pb(NO3)2 + 2 KI → PbI2 + 2 KNO3 CO2 + H2O → H2CO3 2Na + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2 NaCl + AgNO3 → NaNO3 + AgCl Now you try!
