  1. Repeatability Changes: General Overview and Impact on Visual and Performing Arts and Physical Education Chairs and Directors July 24, 2012 Used from ASCCC Curriculum Institute 2012 Materials

  2. 55000-Definitions • Consolidation and Clarification • “active participatory courses” • “course repetition” • “courses that are determined to be legally mandated” • “courses that are related in content” • “Courses with similar primary educational activities in which skill levels or variations are separated into distinct courses with different student learning outcomes for each level or variation.” • “intercollegiate academic or vocational competition courses” • “intercollegiate athletic courses” • “substandard work”

  3. 55040- Student • Allow repeat due to extenuating circumstances • Allow student to repeat a course in occupational work experience under the circumstances described in section 55253. • Legally mandated training • Significant change in industry standard—necessary for employment • Permit a student with a disability to repeat a special class for students with disabilities any number of times • Active participatory courses • “Family” limitations for physical education, visual arts or performing arts

  4. Repeatable Types of Courses • To Meet Major Requirements of CSU or UC • Course repetition is necessary to meet the major requirements for completion of a bachelor’s degree. • Supporting documentation must be retained. • Intercollegiate Athletics (including related conditioning courses) • Intercollegiate academic or vocational competition • All Grades Count 55041-Course

  5. Significant Lapse of Time • No less than 36 months • Exceptions • Recency as a prerequisite for another course • Other higher education institutions requirement • Active participatory courses—repeat for this reason counts against total 55043- Lapse of Time

  6. Intercollegiate Athletics • Limitation to 350 hours • No more than 175 hours in courses that focus on conditioning or skill development. 58162-Athletics

  7. Changes are expected to go into effect for Fall 2013!

  8. Visual and Performing Arts • Only courses which students are required to repeat to complete a B.A. degree at a CSU or UC can be repeatable • Such courses are repeatable for all students, not just majors • All takes of a course will count, including all evaluative and non-evaluative symbols awarded. (D, F, W, NP, etc.) • Most visual or performing arts courses will not be repeatable

  9. Evidence that course repetition is “required” • Existing Articulation Agreements • Articulation and transfer analysis with the Articulation Officer • Catalog from Transfer Institution • Resources: • Info.assist.org • www.assist.org

  10. PE and Athletics • Code all courses as what they really are: • Physical Education • Athletics (including training courses) • Dance • Kinesiology (new TOP code) • Only athletics courses can have repeatability

  11. Determining Families • Be conservative in defining families • Examples: • Swimming: Swimming 1, 2, 3, 4 or Beginning Swimming, Masters Swimming, Distance Swimming, and Swimming for the Triathlete • Theater Performance: Comedy Ensemble, Comedy Supporting Role, Comedy Starring Role, Classical Ensemble, Classical Supporting Role, Classical Starring Role, etc • Painting: Introduction to Painting, Figure Painting, Watercolor Painting, Oil Painting

  12. Options • Leveled course • Separate courses (more distinct content) • Auditing • Directed Study
