Emergency Preparedness: Severe Weather • Severe Weather and Lightning: seek shelter indoors • Tornado Watch: conditions are favorable for a tornado. • Tornado Warning: a tornado has been sighted; time to seek shelter. • Self Test: While working on the grounds crew, how will you be notified of severe weather conditions at UWM?   5. Emergency Preparedness: Severe Weather • Please seek shelter during severe weather. Most buildings have tornado shelters in well protected areas located away from exterior glass or free-span roofs. • The Grounds Maintenance building (top photo) may not be the best location during a tornado. • The adjacent Klotsche-Pavilion parking garage (bottom photo) might be a better option if you can get there safely. Vehicle Safety Rules • Background checks (driver authorization) • Obey “rules of the road” and speed limits • Accident and defect reporting • Pedestrian safety • Follow the campus policy for road vehicles on sidewalks and grounds • Things NOT to do when driving a university vehicle: • No personal listening devices • No riding in the cargo area • Other? Chemical Right-To-Know • Typical grounds chemicals • Read labels and MSDS (material safety data sheets), ask your supervisor if you have any questions or need an MSDS • Familiarize yourself with the NFPA 704 hazard placard • Familiarize yourself with environmental awareness and campus sustainability initiatives • More safety-sustainability information is available at: • pps.uwm.edu • safety.uwm.edu

Special Topic: Flammable Liquids • Hazard awareness of working with flammable liquids • Dispensing • Incident response and fire extinguishing • Spill response and reporting • Disposal issues • Good practice / Bad practice Gasoline is a flammable liquid. This could be your lawn mower. How do you prevent a gasoline fire? What do you do if there is a fire? NFPA 704 rating for gasoline (1-3-0)

  11. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • Eye protection (“Mandatory for string trimmers and edgers! Recommended for everything else!” We supply most PPE, but you are expected to wear the appropriate PPE based on the hazard.) • Gloves • Hearing protection (I-pods don’t qualify!) • Shoes: good sturdy work shoes at a minimum for using powered machinery, no open toed or sandals if you’re working on the grounds crew. Footwear and clothing is your responsibility; other PPE (safety eyewear, hearing protection, gloves, hardhats, safety vests, etc.) is provided by UWM.

  12. Powered Equipment Safety • The supervisory staff will provide you with guidance on safely operating: • riding and push mowers • weed whackers (string trimmers) • bush trimmers • sprayers • chippers • tillers • tower Take Offs (PTOs), point of operation, nip points, machine guarding, etc. • Please present any questions/concerns to your supervisor. Eye protection is mandatory when using or working near a string trimmer and for edging!

  13. ZERO Energy State • Know and follow the concept of ”zero energy state”. • Follow the guidance of senior personnel and the manufacturer’s instructions for all maintenance and adjustment.

  14. Hearing Conservation • As a grounds employee, why protect yourself from noise? • Hearing protection requirements for what equipment? • Inserts vs. Muffs? • “I-pods and personal listening devices are not PPE!” • Community noise ordinance. “Excessive volume may be enjoyable today…but will result in permanent hearing loss.”

  15. Hearing Conservation • The Noise Indicator badge will flash “green” at less than 85 decibels (dB), and flash “red” when over 85 dB. • QUESTION: Your noise “dose”, or your potential for noise induced hearing loss, is based on what factors? Dennis and Steve will loan you the Noise Indicator badge. Hearing protection is available in the Grounds Building .

  16. Other Work Practices • Wear reflective vests if working in roads or near traffic • Campus / community noise requirements and ordinances 9 PM to 7 AM, please be considerate of our neighbors!

  17. If you’re injured on the job: • Notify your supervisor of all injuries and near misses. • Seek appropriate first aid or medical treatment. • Fill out an accident and injury report; get this form from your supervisor. Urgent Care Columbia-St. Mary’s at: 375 West River Woods Parkway, Glendale, just two blocks north of the USR Building Columbia-St. Mary’s emergency room for severe injuries, located at 2323 N. Lake Drive, just 1.5 miles south of campus near the Kenilworth Building.

Self Test • QUESTION: What happens if I come to work and I don’t have the proper/required clothing or shoes? • QUESTION: What happens if I don’t wear my PPE when I’m at work? • QUESTION: What happens if I don’t follow departmental work rules, I don’t follow good health/safety practices and I don’t perform in a workmanlike manner?
