The Indymedia Network How to Participate in the Media Revolution
What’s going on? • All around the world, people are choosing to see differently… • And the way they view the world is not being represented in the “common” media…
What’s Wrong with the Media? • The “common” media, called the “mainstream” or “for-profit” media is not adequately reporting on the world as it is. • The act of “selling” the news puts profit ahead of reporting truth and providing community dialogue.
Top Media Conglomerates • General Electric → NBC • Time Warner → WB, Turner Broadcasting • Walt Disney Company → ABC • Viacom → CBS, UPN • News Corporation → Fox News
The Media Revolution People everywhere are saying NO to for-profit news and the misinformation they spread around the world…rather, it is the people themselves that are choosing rather to BECOME THE MEDIA.
What is Indymedia? The Independent Media Center (indymedia) is a network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate reportings of the truth. Individuals work out of a love and inspiration for people who continue to work for a better world, despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover the efforts to free humanity.
“The role of the journalist is to go where the silence is.” - Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!
There are more than 200 Indymedia Centers (IMCs) around the world. See www.indymedia.org for complete list
How Does Indymedia Work? Each IMC is composed of a local Indymedia collective who has organized the website, decided on an editorial policy, maintains the website, and coordinates news coverage of local events.
How does IndyMedia Work? • Indymedia is an open-publishing network – Anyone can publish, any time. • Articles, photographs, video, audio • The editorial collectives do not edit the stories. • People can comment directly to your stories.
Worldwide Indymedia News • There are two websites that attempt to coordinate local news on a larger scale: • Global Indymedia (www.indymedia.org) • U.S. Indymedia (www.indymedia.us)
San Diego IndyMedia San Diego IMC: http://sandiego.indymedia.org • Meetings 2nd Wednesday at Voz Alta • Hacklab 3rd Wednesday at Voz Alta • Film Nights 4th Wednesday at Voz Alta • Check our website for details • Spread the word • Publish, publish publish!!!!
Why Should I Use Indymedia? • Post events to the online calendar • Hundreds of people visit IndyMedia sites every day! • Stories can be featured on Local IMC sites and then syndicated to the nation-wide Indymedia site
