  2. Opening Activity Think of a time when you had to do multiple things at once, and answer the questions below: • What tasks did you have to do? • How did you do them? • Why did you have to do them at the same time?

  3. Opening Activity Sometimes its necessary to do more than one thing at a time. For example, while you’re in class you have: • Listen to the teacher • Take notes • Remember what you learned yesterday • Dodge paper airplanes • And finish the homework that’s due later

  4. Preview: Multitasking This is called Multitasking, which is when you do more than one thing at the same time. We multitask because it saves time. Sometimes you have to pay attention to more than one thing at a time to get them all done.

  5. Preview: Sequence Beams Robots need to multitask so they can handle everything going on around them. This is almost like having more than one program running at once. The best way to accomplish this is to use multiple Sequence Beams.

  6. Preview: Sequence Beams To create multiple Sequence Beams, hold down Shift on the keyboard while clicking on the stubs at the top or the bottom of the start block, then drag out a new beam.

  7. Preview: Sequence Beams Here we see that the NXT will be running two tasks at once. • It will wait for its Touch Sensor to be bumped then make a noise. • It will spin its A and B motors continuously

  8. Preview: Stop Block Sometimes however, everything just needs to stop. If you spent all day building a robot that was about to drive off the edge of a table, you would want a way to quickly stop it so it wouldn’t fall and break.

  9. Preview: Stop Block Programming an emergency stop is what you’ll learn in Full Stop. To do so, you’ll use the Stop block, which will end the running program immediately. Note that this does not turn off the motors automatically…

  10. Preview: Stop Block You’ll use this block in combination with your Sequence Beams to stop your robot in case of an emergency.
