  1. Heart of DarknessJournal 1 • Imagine that you are about to leave on a long journey to a distant country where everyone is a stranger to you. How do you feel? Jot down your feelings, explaining why you feel as you do.

  2. Heart of DarknessJournal 2 • Write a reaction to and/or analysis of one of the key quotations from Heart of Darkness. Speculate about how the quotation may fit into the story.

  3. Heart of DarknessJournal 3 • What are your impressions of the characters so far? Discuss one or more of the following: • People on the Nellie (including unnamed narrator) • Marlow • Doctor • Marlow’s Aunt • Belgian Trading Company

  4. Heart of DarknessJournal 4 • Take out your Part 1 worksheet. • Make sure that you’ve filled in each box with 3+ quotations (with page numbers). • Reread each quotation. • In your notebook, write a paragraph summarizing the atmosphere or mood of Part 1.

  5. Heart of DarknessJournal 5 • Recall a time when other people’s opinions of someone you did not know influenced your impression of the person. When you got to know the person, was your impression accurate? • Describe the opinions on which your impression was based and explain whether or not it proved to be accurate.
