  1. Wafaa Alsaggaf April 2011 Applied technology and the learning experience: Enhancement of learning programming using mobile devices.

  2. Agenda Background The Problem Research Goal & Significance Research Questions Research Methodology Summary

  3. background • The shift to ICT. • Students and laptop computers. • Ubiquitously.

  4. background Beneficial Non beneficial No difference

  5. The Problem • Statement of the problem: • There is a need for investigation of the best practice of the use of mobile devices, such as laptops, in lectures. Some scholars argue that using mobile devices in lectures for programming languages could make the learning process more effective and engaging for students. How ?

  6. Research Questions This research will answer the following research questions. How can the use of mobile devices in lectures enhance the learning of programming pedagogically? How can classroom activities be designed to make the most effective use of mobile devices in programming lectures? How do using mobile devices in instructors' lectures for enhancing learning of programming affect their preparation?

  7. Research Goal • This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using laptop computers during lectures for practical coding and programming purposes and for applying the instructions on time. Image Source: www.indstate.edu/news/news.php?newsid=915

  8. Significance • Assist universities by exploring how can programming courses be enhanced using mobile devises in lectures of computer science students and instructors in lectures.

  9. motivations • The good percentages on the use of laptops for computer science students that I discovered from my master’s thesis. Titled as: An ICT Strategy for Learning SystemsThe use of Laptops in Lectures

  10. My Survey of RMIT Computer Science Students Prepared to take their own laptop to lectures

  11. My Survey of RMIT Computer Science Students Laptops could assist students with course material in lecture theatre

  12. motivations • programming is a complicated skill to master • Few papers address the topic of how pedagogy can be enhanced with the presence of laptops in the lecture.

  13. Research methodology Action Research methodology provides good quality education by transforming the quality of teaching activities, thereby enhancing students’ learning. [Koshy, 2010]

  14. Develop Reflect Cycles of Action Research • Conducting students & teachers pre action interviews and surveys • Analysing and reflecting on these data • Plan creation: environment, technology, exercises … etc • Implement the plan: applying the lecturer’s programming instructions on time and in face - to – face environment. • Conducting a post action interview and surveys for students and the lecturer & Figuring out the consequences of the usage: pros & cons • ,3 and 4 as above 2 2 3 1 3 1 Act &Observe Plan Reflect Compare & evaluate Plan Act &Observe Cycle 1 Cycle 2 Action Research Model adapted from (O’Leary’s 2004, )

  15. Participants and Timelines The methodology will be conducted on • undergraduate students who are enrolled in a programming course such as (programming 1) • the target instructors who teach programming • Repeating the research cycle two times to gather enough data to draw conclusions .

  16. To Sum up

  17. Summary • There is a need for studying the use of laptops in lectures for learning programming. • This requires an extensive investigation by engaging the stakeholders (students and instructors) • To answer the research question • How can the use of mobile devices in lectures enhance the learning of programming pedagogically? • Action research methodology will be applied to achieve the thesis goals.
