  3. Biography • Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1930 • Began writing when he was 12 • Enjoyed playing outside but had no athletic ability • Enlisted in the army when he was 20 • Served in Korea and Japan • Became a cartoonist for Stars & Stripes Newspaper

  4. Biography • When he got out of the Army, he began drawing cartoons for magazines such as Look and Sports Illustrated • During the 1950s, Silverstein began to write and explore with music • Published his own books of cartoons • Recorded his first album, Hairy Jazz (1959) • Made more than 12 albums

Biography • In 1963 he met Ursula Nordstrom who encouraged him to write children’s books. • The Giving Tree has been translated into more than 30 languages because it is so popular and the theme is widely discussed. • This book was originally rejected because they did not think it would be successful • He found somebody to publish it, and this book became his most popular piece of work.

  6. Biography • Wrote “A Boy Named Sue”, which Johnny Cash sang and made popular • Wrote songs for movies

  7. Biography • Wrote Where the Sidewalk Ends in the 1970s and A Light in the Atiic in 1981 • Both won many awards • Wrote Falling Up and Draw a Skinny Elephant in the 90s. • Passed away on May 10, 1999 from a hart attack in Key West Florida
