  2. RI House Bill H 7077 • Signed into law on June 26, 2012 • Requires national and state criminal background checks for any person who seeks to participate in any mentoring program whereby the individual shall be working with a student(s) as a mentor

  3. Senior Project RE-designed Redesign is for the Classes of 2014 and beyond • Proposal, Paper, Mentorship/ Interview, Product, Presentation • 3 Pathways: • Career Exploration • Investigation • Event Planning

  4. Pathway 1: Career Exploration • Select a career as well as an appropriate mentor to shadow and present the career specifications • WACTC students should preferably complete their senior project within their field of study • A national and state of Rhode Island BCI is required for all mentors with students responsible for all steps and costs of the BCI process

  5. BCI Information 1. Secure a mentor 2. Submit a signed Parent/Guardian Consent - Mentor Commitment Form to your GBP Coordinator 3. Obtain a BCI Request Letter from your GBP Coordinator • Give the letter to your mentor to submit to either the RI Attorney’s General Office or Local Police Department in the town that your mentor resides. • Note: All costs associated with this project including a National and State of RI BCI, are your responsibility. 4. Do not begin your mentorship until your GBP Coordinator receives confirmation of a verified National and State of RI BCI.

  6. Pathway 2: Investigation • Investigate a question or issue, research its cause and effect, propose a detailed solution, and evaluate potential effectiveness • Where possible, implement the solution • An interview process is required, but mentoring can replace the interview

  7. Pathway 3: Event Planning • Plan and run an event • Must contain a civic or social benefit • Recurring events must contain a new student-generated component to demonstrate the effect of student participation in the event • An interview process is required, but mentoring can replace the interview

  8. Summer Approval • If you will be working with a mentor, you can submit your proposal between March 12 (Tuesday) and April 12 (Friday) • If you will not be working with a mentor, you can submit your proposal between May 1 (Wednesday) and May 31 (Friday)

  9. Digital Graduation Portfolio Students in the Class of 2014can use Foreign Languageassignments in place of no more than 1 ELA, 1 Math, 1 Science, or 1 Social Studies requirement per year.
