  2. Vocabulary • Acronym: (noun) a word in which every letter stands for a word • Example: AVID

  3. Vocabulary • Paraphrase: (verb) to put something in your own words • Example: I always paraphrase what the teacher says when I take notes.

  4. Vocabulary • Inquiry: (noun) Searching for answers by asking questions • Example: In AVID, I try to improve my inquiry skills so that I can perform better in all my classes.

  5. Vocabulary • Rigorous: (adjective) Challenging or difficult • Example: My goal is to take the most rigorous classes so I am prepared when I get to college.

  6. AVID • AVID is an acronym that stands for: Advancement Via Individual Determination • AVID is a program that prepares students for college. It is NOT a remedial class.

  7. AVID was started in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson The program began in 1980 at Clairmont High School AVID History

  8. Cornell-Notes • Created by Walter Pauk in 1949 at Cornell University • Designed in response to frustration over student test scores. • Meant to be easily used as a test study guide. • Adopted by most major law schools as the preferred note taking method.
