Invention • the process of finding the available means of persuasion • the brainstorming phase • can be systematic/formal • can be intuitive
Arrangement • selecting, organizing, and arranging one's argument in the most effective manner possible • introduction of the topic • establishing credibility • understanding how a piece is structured is key to analysis
Style • the presentation of one's argument using artistic flair, stylistic devices, and eloquence • virtues of style: correctness, clarity, evidence, propriety (appropriate word choice), ornateness (creating interest) • depends on the situation
Memory • relying on one's memorization skills to appear intelligent and credible • making one’s speech memorable • keeping a treasury of rhetorical fodder • in the past--learning mnemonics • today-- what we know, can access, and use
Delivery • the process of effectively using gestures, vocal inflections, images, and text throughout one's oration • including ethos and pathos • including font size & style, use of white space, visuals, color, graphics, hypertextual links, bullets or numbered lists, use of bold or italics, punctuation
