  6. What happens as BAC increases? • BAC .02 • Feel relaxed • “Normal” thinking and decision making is already impaired • BAC .05 • Judgment is impaired • Confidence increases • Decreased muscular coordination • Slower reaction time

  7. What happens as BAC increases? • BAC .08 - .10 • Reasoning, judgment, coordination, and reaction time severely impaired • Slurred speech • At this point, people often claim they are NOT affected by the alcohol. • Legally intoxicated

  8. What happens as BAC increases? • BAC .12 - .20 • People become confused and disoriented • Complete loss of coordination • Nausea and vomiting can occur • BAC .20 - .30 • Emotions are unpredictable • Blackouts can occur

  9. What happens as BAC increases? • BAC .30 - .40 • Little or no control over their bodies or mind • Person will almost surely blackout • BAC .40 - .50 • Likely unconscious • Breathing and heart rate get dangerously low • Death can occur • BAC .50 and above • Coma and death almost certain

  10. How can you sober up? • Any ideas? • Coffee? • Cold shower? • Bread? • Eat food? • The only real answer??? • TIME!!!

  11. Time… • Time is the ONLY thing that will sober someone up. • The body metabolizes alcohol at .015%/hour • How long would it take someone who has a BAC of .15% to become sober? • 10 hours (.15%/.015% = 10) • .30%? • 20 hours (.30%/.015% = 20)

  14. Strategies to not drink and drive • Wait until you are sober • Have a sober friend drive you home • Call sober parents • Call sober relative • Call sober neighbor • Call sober sibling • Call a taxi… • $5 - $10 vs. $25,000 for DWI

  16. How alcohol affects the body • Nervous system- brain, decline in mental functioning • Digestive system- cancer of the mouth, esophagus and stomach, liver disease • Immune system- lowers the number of infection resisting cells

  17. Cardiovascular system- organs are damaged: heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke • Skeletal system- body loses calcium • Urinary system- kidney failure

  18. Reproductive system- irregular periods, smaller testes and affects development of muscle mass

  19. Drinking and Decision Making • False sense of self confidence, interfere with judgment • Can make you feel invincible • Increases likelihood you will give in to negative peer pressure • Can intensify sexual feelings and dull your reasoning • Aggressive behavior
