  3. Dracunculiasis is a parasitic infection known as “Guinea Worm Disease” • Guinea coast of West Africa in the 1600’s

  4. Caused by the roundworm Dracunculusmedinensis • Grows and matures inside people

  5. What about Treatment?

  6. There is no cure.

  7. Prevention is the best approach • Boreholes or hand dug wells

  8. Water filters and plastic piping • Filters larvae out

  9. Prevention Key: a clean water source • Prevent people with emerging worms from entering ponds/wells used for drinking

  10. Educating people can inevitably prevent gwd

  11. Disease hinders individuals from performing daily duties • Hinders economy
