  2. Aims of the course • Learn about the history of the 19th century England against the background of literature and culture • Develop the skills of reading 19th century English literature and speaking about it • Develop the skills of listening and writing in English

  3. Prerequisites • Interest in literature, history and culture • Willingness to develop this interest • English language skills (A2 or B1)

  4. Course topics • Europe in the 19th century • Britain in the 19th century • English Romanticism • Victorian Age in English Literature • “Turn of the Century” English Literature

  5. Writers and poets to be covered • William Blake • Lake Poets • Jane Austen • Charles Dickens • Bronte Sisters • Robert Louis Stevenson • Oscar Wilde • Thomas Hardy

  6. Methodology • The course will be a combination of lecture and discussion • Discussions will be based on the extracts from the works of 19th century writers (previous slide) studied at home • We will also be using extracts from audio-books and watching scenes from the films based on the 19th century books
